Overview

The Board of Trustees, or School Board, is the ultimate decision-making body in a school district. It is responsible for setting the strategic goals, board policies and curriculums in the school district. It also oversees school administrators, contracts, and school funding matters. School board members are elected representatives.

The CUSD Governing Board has five board members:

  • Renee Cavanaugh (President)
  • Dr. Scot Youngblood (Vice President)
  • Alexia Palacios-Peters (Clerk)
  • Whitney Antrim (Member)
  • Malachy Sandie (Member)

The Superintendent is in charge of overseeing all schools and their educational programs. The Superintendent also administers all school district policies. Karl Mueller is CUSD's Superintendent.

Deputy Superintendents and Directors assist the Superintendent in all school district operational areas. CUSD has the following departments: Business Services, Child Nutrition Services, Human Resources, Learning, and Student Services. The Department of Student Services has a function called "Equity."

Governing Record

Approval of the Agreement between CUSD and the California School Employees Association (CSEA)

  • A tentative agreement for a two year contract that includes a 6% increase over two years, in addition to other compensation and language changes. Annual costs associated with this agreement are estimated at $400K ongoing for year one of the agreement, with an additional $200K (ongoing) for the second year of the agreement.
  • Unanimously approved (Vote 5-0) on March 10, 2022.

Approval of a 3% Pay Raise for Superintendent

  • Unanimously approved (Vote 5-0) on March 10, 2022.

Decision Not to Appeal the California Interscholastic Federation Sanction

  • Motion passed by a vote of 4-1.

  • Whitney Antrim, Lee Pontes, Esther Valdes-Clayton and Helen Anderson-Cruz voted "Ayes." Stacy Keszei voted "Nay."

Decision to Revise Civility Policy [need confirmation]

  • Trustees voted 4-1 not to add any new or potentially pejorative terms to Board Policy 1313 Civility.

  • Lee Pontes, Esther Valdes-Clayton, Stacy Keszei and Helen Anderson-Cruz voted "Ayes." Whitney Antrim voted "Nay."

Approval of the Equity Board Policy 0415

  • Unanimously approved (Vote 5-0) on Oct 15, 2020.
